Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
The short version
Penmark collects nothing about you. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no server of ours for anything to be sent to. Your writing is a file on your iPad. If you switch iCloud sync on, that file is mirrored into your own private iCloud database, which we cannot read.
What the app stores
Everything Penmark keeps, it keeps on your device:
- Your pages: handwriting, typed passages, page settings, and folders
- Which chapters of the book you have marked as read
- Whether the iCloud switch is on
Nothing is transcribed, scored, graded or analysed - not by the app, and not by anything else. There is no handwriting recognition of any kind.
iCloud sync
Off by default. Turning it on in Settings mirrors your library into your own private iCloud database through Apple's CloudKit, so the same writing is on every iPad you sign in with. That data belongs to your Apple Account. Great Dane Code has no access to it and no way to ask for it.
Turning the switch back off stops the syncing. It does not reach into iCloud and delete what is already there - that is yours to remove, from Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Storage. Your writing is also part of your iPad's normal iCloud backup whether the switch is on or off, under Apple's terms rather than ours.
Sharing and PDFs
Sharing a page or saving it as a PDF hands the file to whatever you pick in the system sheet - Files, Mail, another app. Penmark does not upload it anywhere, and where it goes after that is governed by whatever you sent it to.
The tip jar
Penmark is free, and all of it is free. Settings has an optional tip jar that unlocks nothing - there is nothing in the app that is locked. Tips are one-off in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple's StoreKit; nothing renews, and the app never sees your payment details, your name, or your email address. Purchase records live with Apple, under Apple's privacy policy.
Permissions
| Permission | Why | Data sent off-device? |
|---|---|---|
| None required | Penmark asks for no system permissions at all | No |
| iCloud (optional) | Sync your library across your own iPads | Into your own private iCloud only |
Third parties
Penmark uses no third-party SDKs, analytics packages, advertising networks, or social integrations. It is built with Apple's own frameworks (SwiftUI, SwiftData, PencilKit, PDFKit, StoreKit) and nothing else.
Children
Penmark collects no personal data from anyone, of any age, so there is nothing to disclose, sell or share. There are no accounts and no social features.
